About Us

Wards Toys & Books is a family-led store built from lived experience, care and understanding.

Our journey began with our son Dexter and the creation of Scruffy the Uffy — a much-loved character inspired by Dexter’s own experiences growing up with severe visual impairment. As Dexter’s world evolved, so did Scruffy’s, becoming a source of comfort, representation, inclusion and adventure through books, sensory exploration and storytelling.

While searching for supportive, inclusive and accessible products for Dexter, we quickly realised how limited the options could be for many families. That experience inspired us to create a space that feels welcoming, thoughtful and understanding for all children and families — especially those navigating sensory needs, neurodivergence, disability or additional support needs.

Today, Wards Toys & Books carefully selects sensory toys, inclusive books, calming tools and thoughtful gifts designed to support comfort, curiosity, engagement and joy for every brilliant mind.

We believe shopping for supportive products should feel simple, welcoming and inclusive — never overwhelming.
